What rose quartz is. Rose quartz is a pink variety of quartz, usually milky rather than clear, from pale blush to deep rose. Its color comes from microscopic fibers of a pink mineral spread through the crystal. It rates 7 on the Mohs scale and comes mostly from Brazil and Madagascar. In crystal tradition it is tied to the heart chakra and stands for love, self-love and compassion.

How to wear it. Tradition places rose quartz close to the heart, so choose a chain long enough to let the pendant rest there, against the skin: about 18 to 20 inches for most people. Gold tones warm the pink; silver keeps it cool and modern. It is also one of the easiest gifts to give, for a partner, a friend, a mother or yourself.

Real or fake? Natural rose quartz is soft in color, slightly uneven and a little hazy inside. Bright candy pink, perfectly even color, or round bubbles usually mean glass or dyed stone, and "cherry quartz" is often glass. Our rose quartz meaning guide has a full checklist.

Care. Long, strong sun can slowly pale some rose quartz, so keep it off sunny windowsills. Rinse a pendant quickly, dry it with a soft cloth, and skip salt soaks, which are hard on chains. The orgonite pyramid takes a dry cloth only. Every method is in how to cleanse crystals. For a classic pair, add a piece from our amethyst collection.

Frequently asked questions

What does wearing a rose quartz necklace mean?
In crystal tradition, rose quartz is the stone of love: self-love, romance, friendship and compassion. Wearing it near the heart is a daily reminder to be gentle, with others and with yourself. Read more in our rose quartz meaning guide.
Who should not wear rose quartz?
There is no rule: anyone can wear it. Some people pick a bolder stone, like tiger's eye, when they want an energizing mood, and everyone should take a pendant off for the pool or the gym.
Is rose quartz an expensive stone?
No. Rose quartz is plentiful, so a natural rose quartz pendant is affordable: ours run from $24 to $49. Rare star rose quartz and large carved pieces cost more.
What birth month is rose quartz?
Rose quartz is not on the official modern birthstone list. In crystal tradition it belongs to Taurus and Libra, the two signs ruled by Venus, and it is a loved gift for any month, from birthdays to Valentine's Day.
Can a rose quartz necklace get wet?
A quick rinse is fine, since the stone is hard and not porous. Dry it after, and keep it out of pools and salt water to protect the chain.
