What amethyst is. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Traces of iron in the crystal give it its color, from pale lilac to deep violet. It rates 7 on the Mohs scale, comes mostly from Brazil and Uruguay, and is the February birthstone. In crystal tradition it stands for calm, clarity and intuition.

How to wear it. A pendant on a 16 to 18 inch chain sits at the collarbone; 20 inches or longer lets it fall closer to the heart, where tradition likes a stone to rest against the skin. For rings and bracelets, crystal lore says the left hand "receives" and the right hand "gives". Take it off for the gym or heavy work: hard stones can still chip.

Real or glass? Real amethyst is rarely one flat color: it is often darker in places, with fine veils inside, and it feels cool before it warms in your hand. Glass is perfectly even and may hold round air bubbles. Our amethyst meaning guide has the full checklist.

Care. Keep amethyst out of long, direct sun, which can slowly fade its purple. Rinse a pendant in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap and dry it well; an orgonite pyramid takes a dry cloth only. Our guide on how to cleanse crystals covers every method. Love pairs? Amethyst and rose quartz are a classic duo, and every pyramid we make is in orgonite pyramids.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of wearing an amethyst necklace?
In crystal tradition, amethyst is associated with calm, clarity and spiritual insight, so people wear it as a daily reminder of that intention. It is also hard enough for everyday wear, suits gold and silver tones, and makes a natural February birthday gift.
How much is a real amethyst necklace?
It depends on the size and depth of color of the stone and on the metal. A natural amethyst pendant can be affordable: ours run from $24 to $37, while large, deep stones in solid gold cost much more.
Is amethyst an expensive gem?
Not anymore. Until the 19th century it was priced like ruby and emerald; then large deposits were found in Brazil, and a real, richly colored amethyst came within reach.
How can I tell if my amethyst is real?
Look for uneven color, fine natural veils inside and a stone that feels cool at first. Glass is perfectly even and may show round bubbles. See the checklist in our amethyst meaning guide.
Can I wear an amethyst necklace every day?
Yes. At 7 on the Mohs scale it handles daily wear. Just avoid leaving it in strong sun for hours, and store it apart from other jewelry so it does not scratch.
