What lapis lazuli is. Lapis is a rock rather than a single mineral: blue lazurite, white calcite and brassy flecks of pyrite. Its classic source is Sar-e-Sang in Afghanistan, mined for some 6,000 years. The Egyptians set it into Tutankhamun's funeral mask, and Renaissance artists ground it into ultramarine, the blue of the Virgin's robes. Its name means "blue stone".

How to wear it. Modern tradition links lapis to the throat, the center of honest speech, so a chain that lets the stone sit near the collarbone is the classic choice. Many wear it against the skin as a reminder to speak clearly and kindly. To keep lapis on your desk, our Sovereign Abundance orgonite is a hand-poured pyramid with lapis, malachite and amethyst ($49).

Real vs fake. Lapis is one of the most imitated stones. Real lapis has random, brassy pyrite flecks and soft white calcite clouds. Dyed howlite shows gray spider-web lines, sodalite shows bold white veins, and evenly spaced glitter is a warning sign. Our lapis lazuli spiritual meaning guide compares each look-alike.

Care. At 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, lapis is softer than quartz. Store it apart, keep perfume and lotion off it (its calcite reacts to acid) and clean it with a barely damp cloth, never a soak. For dry rituals such as smoke, sound or moonlight, see how to cleanse crystals.

Frequently asked questions

How expensive is real lapis lazuli?
It depends on color and purity: an even, deep royal blue with little white and fine gold flecks is the most valued, and paler stones with more calcite cost less. Our lapis necklaces run from $24 to $42.
What are the benefits of wearing a lapis lazuli necklace?
In crystal tradition, lapis lazuli is worn for truth, wisdom and inner vision, often at the throat as a reminder to speak honestly. These are meanings to carry, not promises; our lapis lazuli spiritual meaning guide tells its long history.
How can I tell if my lapis lazuli is real?
Look for random brassy pyrite and soft white calcite, and feel its weight: real lapis is heavy for its size. Even, glittery flecks or dye on a cotton swab are signs of a copy.
Can lapis lazuli go in water?
A quick wipe with a damp cloth is fine. Don't soak it, and keep it away from salt water and cleaning products.
What goes well with lapis lazuli?
In crystal practice, lapis is often paired with amethyst and malachite, the classic trio of our abundance collection, and with gold, which echoes its pyrite flecks. Many also pair it with amethyst for meditation.
